Perhaps this sounds familiar: "The power adapter type cannot be recognized. Your battery will not charge."

This isn't exactly the same as the warning that many Dell users are probably pretty familiar with, but it's basically the same thing. You see, Dell likes to package their laptops with a power adapter that is well known for having issues connecting with the computer, resulting in a message which basically states that the Dell model of power adapter you are using is not recognized by your Dell laptop. Isn't that special?

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. So what do you do about it? Well, you could buy another one of the same faulty model they send to you, or you could just go with an off-brand like this. The off-brand is cheaper, and in this case it actually works much better. The design of the Dell power adapter leaves a lot to be desired, with a plug that just isn't up to the charge of normal, everyday laptop use. Bend the cord beyond a 90 degree angle anywhere near the plug, and chances are that inside the wire, the connections will begin to strip. Dell's power adapters are just poor quality, as evidenced by the fact that mine fell apart after about a year of normal use. When I say "fell apart," I mean the inside of the wire became exposed. I didn't do anything ridiculous with it, so it blows my mind that normal use could cause this.

That being said, this replacement is a dream come true. Upon plugging it in for the first time, I discovered that the laptop not only recognized the adapter, but it was charging my battery. Of course, this battery still needs to be replaced (as it holds about a half hour to an hour of charge at most), but it was nice to find that just a simple $10 replacement adapter from an off-brand company not only did the job, but worked better than the Dell product. No telling how long this will last, but the way the cord is wrapped near the plug is honestly more efficient than what you'll find with the Dell product. I don't need an extra little LED light in the cord of my adapter to be able to tell if it is receiving power -- I'm not that freakin' stupid.

Bottom Line: This is a cheaper model than the standard Dell adapter (meaning the over-all length isn't as long and it can heat up pretty badly from time to time), but ultimately more efficient and probably a better choice. It might not last as long, it might last longer -- whatever the case, it's a lot cheaper and it works much better than the Dell product ever did.

If anyone's wondering, I have the Dell XPS 15 Model L501X, and this product works perfectly with it. If you're looking for an adapter replacement, make sure to match up the voltage/wattage/amperage exactly, as they are the most important factors. I've actually seen 130W models being sold as compatible with the L501X -- DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BUY THESE MODELS! YOU WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER! Match up the voltage/wattage/amperage to the exact specifications of the model of adapter you are currently using and you will be just fine and have a much better, safer experience.
